ニューヨーカー流の絵の選び方(ただし３０年以上前の話）

 1989年の夏、僕はマンハッタンに一か月ほど滞在していた。
ある日曜の午後、こじんまりとした画廊に立ち寄って、絵を眺めていた。
すると、初老のおじさんが、
「この絵は、お勧めだよ。オリジナルなんだ」
と、僕に話しかけてきた。どうやらこの店のオーナーさんらしい。
「この絵を描いた作家はまだ生きているの？」
と、僕が質問すると、おじさんは、顔色を変えて、
「絵の選び方を、教えてあげよう」とまだ二十代の若い青年だった僕を諭すように言った。
「絵を買う時には、将来、値上がりするとかしないとか、そういう基準で選んではいけない。絵を自分の部屋の壁に飾ったイメージを思い浮かべて、毎日、この絵を眺めたい、と思えるかどうか、それを基準にして、絵を選ぶんだよ」
今日、朝、コーヒーを飲んでいた時、ふと、その時、おじさんが言ったことを思い出した。
なぜ、思い出したのかは、わからないのだけれど......

【日英対訳】北原白秋「五十音」(その９)"The sounds of the Japanese syllabary (Part-9)"by Hakushuu KITAHARA

雷鳥（らいちょう）は寒（さむ）かろ、
ラ、リ、ル、レ、ロ。
蓮花（れんげ）が咲いたら、瑠璃（るり）の鳥。

Wrapped up in the snow, a grouse must feel cold.
RA, RI, RU, RE, RO.
Lotus flowers, lapis lazuli birds.

[NOTE] (1)samukaro 寒かろ can be typed by "samui" 寒い and deleting い, then add "karo"かろ.
(2) 雷鳥 can be translated into English as "a grouse" or "a rock ptarmigan." I chose the first one because I want to make my English translations in a style of "pentameter." 
(2) I think that 瑠璃の鳥 probably indicates "birds that have a color of lapis lazuli."

焼栗（やきぐり）、ゆで栗。
ヤ、イ、ユ、エ、ヨ。
山田（やまだ）に灯（ひ）のつく宵（よい）の家。

Yum yum, chestnuts, some roasted, others boiled.
YA, I, YU, E, YO.
Young-night's mountain fields, lights are lit at homes.
